It isn’t uncommon from brown spots to appear on your ceiling due to water infiltration from busted water pipes or your roof. When it is from your roof, it can be caused from missing shingles, damaged flashing, buckling of the roofing materials, etc. Here’s what you need to do when you see these water spots on your ceiling:
Don’t Ignore Them!
The first thing that you want to do is make sure that you do not ignore them. If you see a brown spot on your ceiling, it is the sure sign of a leak. It could be a plumbing leak, but it is most probably a roof leak. Therefore, you need to deal with it promptly to ensure that you stop the leak and avoid any serious damage. If you ignore the problem, irreparable damage will occur and you will end up having to tear out the damage portion of the ceiling and replace it, among other repairs, aside from the leak source.
Determine If There’s Indeed a Leak.
Your first step in identifying a leak is going to be heading up to your attic. Use a flash light and look for water stain on all of your rafters as well as the roof decking. Make sure to also pay close attention to roof vents, fans and chimney pipe vents. You also will want to perform a visual inspection on the roof. It may also be a good idea to enlist the help of a friend for another inspection. One of you will get on top of the roof while the other one is inside the other attic. The person in the attic will shine a flash light through the roof in the area where the stains were found. If the light shines through where the person on the roof can see it, this is the obvious source of the leak and a roof repair is necessary immediately.
Contact a Roofing Professional.
If a roof leak was identified, it is important to contact a professional for guidance on how to proceed. In some cases, it may just be a minor repair. In other cases, an entire section of the roof may need to be replaced. If you were unable to identify the source of your leak, you may need to have an experienced roofer perform a full inspection to make sure that you didn’t miss something. They have expertise in this area and are trained to locate even the tiniest of problems.
